What is rPET Plastic?

| Edge-2-Edge Thermoform

There’s no question that we all want a more sustainable future.  Are plastics a part of that?  When we think of rPET plastic, we can say yes, plastics can be part of this more sustainable future!

What exactly IS rPET plastic, and why is it gaining so much attention?  Let’s dive into the world of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and learn about its benefits, challenges, and applicatitions.

Let’s start with what rPET is.  As we mentioned, it stands for “recycled polyethylene terephthalate” (truly a mouthful).  It’s a type of plastic made by recycling PET, which is commonly used in products like water bottles and food containers.  PET is known for its durability, lightweight nature, and versatility, making it one of the most widely used plastics globally.

The journey of rPET starts with the collection of used PET products.  These items are cleaned, sorted, and processed to remove any impurities.  The cleaned PET is then melted down and reformed into pellets or flakes, which can then be used to manufacture new products.  This process not only reduces the need for virgin plastic but also helps in managing plastic waste more effectively.

There are a multitude of benefits to using rPET.  One of the most significant is its positive impact on the environment; by recycling PET, we reduce the demand for new plastic production, which in turn lowers greenhouse emissions and conserves natural resources.  Producing rPET requires less energy compared to manufacturing new PET rom raw materials; this energy savings translates into a smaller carbon footprint for products made from rPET.  By reusing existing plastic, rPET significantly reduces the amount of plastic pollution by diverting plastic waste from landfills and oceans.

The versatility of rPET is something to call out.  It can be used in a wide variety of applications, from packaging and textiles to automotive parts and construction materials.  This makes it a valuable material in various industries.  When we think specifically about the food packaging industry, rPET retains the benefits of PET, such as being lightweight, strong, and shatterproof.  It also offers excellent transparency, which is ideal for showcasing products.  Advanced decontamination technologies ensure that rPET meets stringent safety standards for food contact materials.

Of course, not every product is perfect.  While rPET offers numerous benefits, it also comes with some challenges.  For example, each time PET is recycled, it’s quality can degrade slightly meaning that rPET may not be suitable for all applications without the addition of virgin PET to maintain quality.  The market demand for rPET is growing, but still faces competition from cheaper, virgin plastics.  Increasing consumer awareness and their desire to use products with more sustainable packaging can help drive the market for rPET.

It’s no secret that we use a lot of plastic at think4D.  We continue to seek sustainable solutions wherever possible, and we see rPET as a viable option as it represents a significant step toward sustainability.  While it’s not a perfect solution, its benefits in terms of environmental impact, energy efficiency, and waste reduction make it an essential component in our efforts to manage plastic waste and protect our environment.
