Using QR Codes on Your Packaging

| Edge-2-Edge Thermoform

~ by Holly Thorne-Wiebe, think4D Digital Marketing Coordinator

In an increasingly digital world, businesses are continually seeking new and innovative ways to connect with consumers and enhance their shopping experience.  QR codes can transform ordinary packaging and labels into interactive gateways; incorporating them into your label design is not just a trend, but a strategic advantage.

First things first…what is a QR Code and how do they work?  It’s a type of barcode that stores information in a 2D matrix. QR stands for “quick response” and unlike traditional barcodes they can be scanned in two directions – top to bottom and right to left. Each QR code can store up to 7,000 digits or around 4,000 characters and encodes website links, phone numbers, or email addresses.  When you scan a code using a compatible device, the embedded data is decoded and processed by scanning the arrangement of black and white modules.  The data is translated from its arrangement back into the data’s original form.

Now that you know the basic of how a QR code works, why should be using QR codes on your packaging?

  1. It enhances consumer engagement.  QR codes offer a direct line of communication between the brand and the consumer.  It gives them access to a wide range of information, including detailed product information and specifications, how-to guides, customer reviews and testimonials, and more.  By providing instant access to this information, QR codes build trust and transparency.
  2. Incorporating QR codes into your packaging can significantly streamline the shopping process.  For instance, when scanning a code, consumers can instantly access coupons or special offers, check product availability, or compare products without the need for extensive research.  By giving this convenience to consumers, brands can enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  3. Because product packaging often has limited space, QR codes solve this problem by acting as a digital bridge.  Instead of using the valuable label “real estate”, brands can use a QR code that links to essential information.  This makes the packaging more aesthetically pleasing but also supports sustainability efforts by reducing the need for excessive printed materials.
  4. One of the significant advantages of QR codes is their ability to link to dynamic content that can be updated in real time.  This means that brands can provide the latest product information or promotions without the need to change the packaging.  Seasonal or time-sensitive content can be managed easily, and consumers can access the most current information and offers, thus enhancing their experience and satisfaction.
  5. QR codes are an incredibly powerful tool for brands to gather valuable consumer data.  When someone scans a code, brands can collect data on its scan frequency and location, consumer preferences, and engagement with specific content.  This helps brands understand consumer behavior and refine their marketing strategies, tailor their product offerings, and enhance overall customer experience.
  6. Counterfeit products are a significant issue in many industries.  QR codes help combat this by providing a means of verifying the product’s authenticity.  Consumers can scan the QR code to confirm the product they are purchasing is genuine, giving peace of mind and protecting your brand’s integrity.
  7. The use of QR codes goes beyond the point of sale.  After a product is purchased, QR codes can link to warranty registration pages, provide customer support, and connect to loyalty programs and additional offers.  This continued engagement helps build and maintain a relationship with the customer long after the initial purchase.

As technology continues to evolve, so will the potential applications of QR codes, making them an essential component of product packaging.  By leveraging their power, you can transform your packaging into a dynamic, valuable, and interactive aspect of the customer experience.
