Is The War on Plastics Justified?

| Edge-2-Edge Thermoform

Plastic is a material found everywhere in our lives.  It has revolutionized industries and consumer products.  However, its environmental aspect has sparked a global debate.  Is this war on plastics justified, though?  We need to see both sides of the argument.  Let’s explore both the positives and negatives of plastic use, particularly in the areas of packaging and labeling.

THE PROS:

  • COST EFFECTIVE – Plastic is inexpensive to produce, making it an attractive choice for manufacturers.  It allows for cost savings in packaging, which then can be passed on to consumers.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE – Plastic is lightweight, which reduces both transportation costs and energy consumption.  It also helps protect products from damage during transit due to its durability.
  • VERSATILITY – Because it can be molded into various shapes and sizes, plastic allows for diverse packaging needs and great flexibility.
  • HYGIENE AND SAFETY – Plastic packaging provides a barrier against contaminants, making sure that products stay safe, and their shelf life is extended.

THE CONS:

  • ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT – Pollution from plastic is a significant concern.  Single-use plastics like bags and straws end up in landfills and oceans, affecting wildlife and ecosystems.
  • NON-BIODEGRADEABLE – Most plastics don’t biodegrade; they break down into smaller microplastics that last in the environment for centuries.
  • RESOURCE DEPLETION – The production of plastic relies on fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.  Also, petroleum-based plastics deplete non-renewable resources.
  • HEALTH RISKS – Some plastics contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food and water.  Long-term exposure may cause health problems.

The “war on plastics” is multifaceted and involves finding a balance between convenience, affordability, and environmental responsibility.  Here’s how think4D is working to reduce our environmental impact while we work with plastics:

  • we have made a concentrated effort to find ways to re-use any scrap plastic. We are committed to not adding any of our scrap to landfills but will partner with others to re-use any leftover material.
  • we use plastic that is made up of recycled content whenever possible.
  • we have been working closely with recycling experts to explore the best materials and inks for the recycling stream and using these whenever possible.
  • we have been working on educating consumers. For many products, they are easily recyclable, but the consumer must take responsibility for doing so. We encourage our customers to add a perforation to their sleeve which enables it to be removed and the container to be recycled easily. If it’s easier to remove, chances are higher that the consumer will recycle the product.
